Case Study: ATB Financial

With over 70 years of experience, ATB is the largest Alberta-based financial institution with more than 670,000 customers in 244 Alberta communities through a network of 164 branches.

ATB needed an efficient way to audit data use on its Netapp filers, to identify stale and non-business related data for archival and removal, and to identify, assign and involve data owners in management of their data. ATB had tried using native windows auditing for their 200 TB of unstructured data, but like many organizations they found that windows auditing took up too much space, analysis was time consuming, and ultimately did not yield accurate, actionable results.

Pat Wren, Managing Director, IT Operations knew they needed a better way to audit their NetApp. Further, he knew they needed to get control over their permissions to make sure only the right people had access to sensitive data. A critical requirement was the ability to report across both the Netapp N-series appliances and windows file servers.

According to Wren, “The DatAdvantage® tools have assisted ATB Financial to better manage their unstructured data and work with the data owners to assign the proper access authority”.
